Amtrak Train Crash Lawyer: Personal Injury Attorneys Weigh In

We hope to soon have the answer to the question why an Amtrak train derailed on May 12, 2015 while rounding a curve. At the time of the accident, there were 238 passengers and 5 crew members on board. There are eight known fatalities. All passengers are now believed to be accounted for.

We know now that the Amtrak train was travelling at 106 mph, on a curve with a 50mph speed limit. What we don’t know is why the engineer allowed the Amtrak train to reach 106mph and we don’t know why he did not slow the Amtrak train down. We know that had a positive train control mechanism been in place the accident would not have taken place. An in place positive train control mechanism would have automatically prevented the Amtrak train from travelling through the curve at a speed greater than 50 mph.

The Washington DC – New York rail corridor is the busiest stretch of Amtrak nationwide. The death, physical and emotional trauma that the accident needlessly caused many local commuters and their families cannot be ignored. Twenty year old Annapolis Naval academy midshipman, Justin Zemser, lost his life in the tragedy along with seven others. Because of the crash, more than 200 survivors have been admitted to various hospitals.

As train rail accident lawyers in Washington D.C., we have represented many passengers in the aftermath of public transportation catastrophes, and in each case, we have found our clients’ the answers they sought – what happened and why and how do we prevent this from ever taking place again.
